I love horses! My friend has one but she is a real dark brown american saddlebred. I am not allowed to ride her because she is a wild horse.

How can a saddlebred be a wild horse if some one owns it, or is it just not trained? I happened to have a saddlebred-quarter horse last year and he is amazing but do you know if there would be a difference in the way he walks? hope you reply!

I am not sure about that question but I have to tell you I totally agree how is a horse wild if some one owns it? - alex ponke

The American Saddlebred IS 'American made' and not Canadian. The slowgait and rack are a precise 1-2-3-4 gait and the pairs of feet do NOT move 'almost together' but separately - anything else would be penalized. The feet are not unnaturally long but are limited by rules. Pads are added for a few ounces of weight and to spread the pressure of the feet hitting the ground. Whoever wrote this article has NO knowledge of the breed. The girl who said her horse was 'wild' is young and only meant the horse had not been trained yet. No big deal.

I bought a Morgan at an auction for my daughter when she was 10 years old. She liked to hang around the race track. A lot ofpeople hit her up for a race. She out run every horse. A lot of people tried to buy him. She liked to barrel race . He couldnt change leads at the barrels. I bought her a quarter horse. He could change leads but was not near as fast as the Morgan. She then gave the morgan back to me. I never been on a better horse. I kept him until he died of old age. If I ever get another horse it would be a Morgan

Appaloosas are a wonderful breed. Please be aware that Appys are prone to ERU (equine recurring uveitis) and have a tendency to start losing sight as they get older. I rescued my Appy when he started going blind. He is now 28, completely blind and doing very well. He is field boarded and has adjusted so well that many people would never know he can't see. I still ride him on short trail rides and he does great as long as he is with another horse. I love his rascally personality and calm demeanor. Don't know what I would do without him.

I have a 5-6 yr old Fjord, shy of 15 hands and about 1100lbs. Just moved him to Florida from Nebraska. Everyone that sees him says he is fat. He does not have a belly and to me, looks good. Only thing I notice, but thought it a Fjord thing, is his crested neck. He is in a large paddock but does need some exercise, which starts this weekend with the round pen. He is only on hay, from Nebraska, right now. Should I be feeding anything else? supplements, etc?

Sounds like you have a wonderful horse. Hay is very good and should be the main component of a horses diet as it provides roughage. There are also many specialized supplements for coat, joints, and hooves that can be fed for extra nutrition. However, I would talk to an equine veterinarian in the area about his diet before adding supplementation. You can learn more diet in the horse feeding section on the 'Horse Care Page'... here: http://horses.animal-world.com/information/horse-care.php#Horse Feeding

It really depends on many factors. What type of horse are you getting? How old is the horse?
  • Anonymous - 2013-11-07
just try and feed it different things and see if it likes it but i recommend you look the horse up before hand.

Most horses like carrots and apples.

what to feed will depend a lot on size, usage, and the individual animal. good pasture in the summer, good hay(never moldy) when pasture is not available. obviously a heavy built 16 hand horse, will need more than a 13hand pony. some will stay fat on less, while others need more just to walk around. I have a mini donkey who gets hog-fat just on pasture in the summer, and I have to put him on a diet the rest of the year, but there are others who aren't such easy keepers. if it's ridden, or worked, a lot it will need more just to maintain condition. I would suggest that, before an animal is purchased, you talk to several people who already have horses, and buy a book on basic horsekeeping. horsekeeping is a big responsibility, and you should learn all you can before that purchase is made.
