Hi, We were given a green and red macaw and we are trying to get Pepper to stop plucking her feathers. What can we do for our beautiful pet? Thank you Keith & Gina.<><

Plucking is probably the worst thing to try and stop - really hard. Things you can try are bathing the bird frequently by spraying it with aloe bird bath or just water. You can try bathing him in the kitchen sink with the sprayer or some even use the shower. Lots of toys and things to chew on. Paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, toys made from a 2 X 4 (untreated). Lots of stimulation and out time. TV cartoons or tapes like Happy Feet, Surfs Up, RIO - believe it or not they do watch. Some try a collar which will prevent the bird from plucking. It works for some and just scares the others. I'd do a collar as a last resort- The more attention, stimulation and activity - the less likely he is to pluck. No ones fault - and it is hard to stop.

I think they usually do that when they are bored. How long have you had her? You have to provide a lot of stimulating toys, safe for parrots, of course. You have to spend a lot of time with them too. We were just practically given a Green Winged named Salsa with an injured foot this past week. She gets bored being in the cage so we let her out and spend time petting her and hand feeding her. Remember in the wild they spend the day looking for food and exploring so they really need to be stimulated. I have only had parakeets and Jenday/Black Capped Conures before so I am kind of new to the Mccaws and learning like you. You might want to join a parrot group online. One group I love is http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/conure-lovers/
I joined a while ago and I have gained so much knowledge from the members. Much more knowledge then I have. It isn't just for Conures. Anyone who has a love for parrots can join or even if you just want to research owning a bird. I am also looking for a parrot group where I live also to look for more info on vet care, feeding, etc. My vet is good but I am looking for a specialist to look at her foot. She seems to get around fine but want to see what else we can do for her. The foot was broken before and never set so it has healed weird. Just having Salsa for a few days, we can't believe how calm and affectionate she is. She loves to be petted and played with. One thing she loves are the nuts in the shells instead having the nuts served. I hide them around the house and she hunts for them. Kind of messy but worth the effort because it's fun to watch her. She loves to walk on the floor which amazed me.

Check her diet!! Sounds like she is missing clay, or some other nutrient. And/or vitamin December (sunlight).

I have a green wing macaw, she is great, loving and playful friendly to me and my wife (not to many others). She has picked up a new habit of taking her food dishes out of their placement in the cage and dropping them on the floor, this was not too often at first, however now it is many times a day.. hard to feed and water her when she won't leave the dishes alone. The way she gets them out of their holders is very smart. Does anyone have any ideas? PS new pird in the house, however she was doing this before the African grey came in.

Sounds like she's keeping you on your toes in the creative area... have you tried dishes that mount from the outside? Many bird farms will carry a variety of different types of dishes, also your local pet store that deals in large birds would be able to help you come up with options. Good luck:)

I was brought a Severe Macaw from a rescue by a family member.  I had always wanted a macaw.  He took right away to my younger son.  It took me a while to get him to come to me.  Being patient, feeding him, letting him out on the cage, talking to him, bringing him toys, sharing food with him.  Do whatever it takes for him to know that you love him.  Now he hangs out with me, drives in the car, goes to the park and loves to hide inside my flannel bird shirt.  I adore him.  He is very cute and I love his compact size.  His beautiful soft white face is very kissable.  He is talky, clowny, curious, loves to sing, go on outings, running errands, go to pow wows.  He was plucking when we got him so I got him a birdie hoodie to shield him from his plucking.  You can also make one out of a sock and put on him.   A 'Flight Suit' makes him more portable as the 'Flight Suit' catches the droppings and protects his chest from plucking. He does require a lot of attention to keep him healthy and happy. I've found keeping him well socialized by sharing him with other family members or a local sanctuary keeps him balanced.

That's a tough problem, and can be hard to solve because a lot of times birds become 'plucking addicts.' I did find a really good article that addresses a lot of things that are thought to be possible causes of the Hahn's Macaw's plucking problem, you can see it here on parrotforums.com. Also, there is a product that gets good reviews called 'Pluck No More' and is offered for sale here at Kingscages.com. Good luck to you both!

I have a 'female' Hahn's Macaw, her name is Sally Macaw! Sally has been living with me and my family for 1 & 1/2 years now. I know she has had at least one previous owner before me but no one knew her name so I named her Sally! She only saids 'good bird' so far but I continously talk to her so she can pick up a word or two sometime soon! She is probably 4-5 years old, my vet told me, and she is quite friendly, but mostly to me! She doesn't play with bird toys, believe me I have tried a dozen so far! She likes to tear up cardboard and chew on apple sticks. She enjoys showers with me, she has her own perch in my bathtub, stuck to a wall! She really hates loud noises and she loves to be in her own room where it is quiet and peaceful!
