Parazoanthus gracilis

   An interesting colonial coral, the polyps will open or close at the same time. Because of this it is believed that the individual polyps send messages to each other probably by chemical means.

Lighting - Water flow:
   Low water movement is required. This coral contains zooxanthellae and so requires medium to strong light.

Difficulty of Care:
   Easy to care for. Can be recommended to beginners. They can be fed brine shrimp, chopped worms, flake food, mysis. May decline if not fed regularly.

Aggressiveness:
   Will sting stony corals and should not be placed next to Discosoma spp. or other corallimorphs (mushroom anemones).

The Sunflower Coral is one tough customer. My chiller just died the other day, allowing my Red Sea Max reef tank to reach at least 90F, from its usual 79F, and this coral came through with flying colors, literally! My Mushroom anemones also survived, although they shrunk a bit. Neale 2007-09-05
I have had some success with yellow polyps, to the point that they have become a nuisance in my tank. They are growing on the tank walls and are attacking my lps and sps corals. I'm now seeking a way to cull or eliminate them. Bruce Imrie 2007-08-12
